Brenda Johnston is a psychiatric DNP and PMHNP. She is the coordinator of the PMHNP Program at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown West Virginia and works in private practice. She has been a registered nurse for 37 years and her background includes Emergency Nursing; she developed and coordinated the Forensic Nursing Program at Winchester Medical Center from 1998 – 2008. She completed her undergraduate and graduate nursing programs at Shenandoah University (SU) and earned her Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) from George Mason University in 2014.
Brenda Johnston’s special interests are mood disorders including anxiety, depression, and attention deficient hyperactivity disorder. She has an extensive background in mental health care and has experience in both private and community outpatient and inpatient mental health facilities. The safety of her patients is always at the forefront of her care.
Dr. Johnston is the current president of the Virginia Chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association. She is also a member of the American Nurses Association, the Virginia Council of Nurse Practitioners, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Nursing Honor Society’s Rho Pi Chapter, and the American Psychiatric Nurse’s Association. She also served as the past president of the Virginia Chapter of the International Association of Forensic Nursing, the STTI Rho Pi Chapter and the Northern Shenandoah Valley Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
